News Release - April 11, 2017

PITTSBURGH- The Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP) will host its annual jazz
“fun-raiser” on Monday, April 17, 2017 at the Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center. The
event runs from 5:30 pm. - 11 :30 pm. Tickets for the event are $35, and $30.00 for
seniors, 65 & up, and students.

The event, in its 12th year, has continued to infuse social and political issues with jazz.
“Music has historically been part of many social protests,” said Tim Stevens, Chairman of
B-PEP. “Jazz specifically has really deep roots in Pittsburgh.” This year’s inter-racial and
cross generational jazz extravaganza features over eighty (80) of the Pittsburgh Region’s
very best musicians and vocalists. This year B-PEP JAZZ is very proud to feature three
young jazz groups, the Afro American Music Institute Youth Ensemble, The Center Of Life
(COL) Jazz Combo, and the Funky Fly Project. The Host Bands will include Roger
Humphries & the R H Factor and the Tim Stevens Project, and will feature many of the
traditional area jazz giants such as Don Aliquo, Sr., Etta Cox & AI Dowe, Michele Bensen,
Tony Campbell, Dr. Nelson Harrison, and Jimmy Sapienza, just to name a few! There will
also be special performances by Artistree Live, the Kevin Howard Band and Ho
Wilson & the Old School Band.

The B-PEP JAZZ Host Committee Chair is Carol Neyland, Senior Vice President,
Community Development, Dollar Bank.

The City Council of Pittsburgh adopted a proclamation for the City of Pittsburgh declaring
Monday, April 17, 2017 as Black Political Empowerment Project Day in Pittsburgh.

All proceeds from the fundraiser support B-PEP, which also spearheads the Corporate
Equity & Inclusion Roundtable (CEIR), and the Greater Pittsburgh Coalition Against
Violence (CAV).

This jazz extravaganza is presented in association with The Pittsburgh Jazz Society, BNY
Mellon, and the WZUM-The Pittsburgh Jazz Channel. Numerous companies, corporations,
agencies, organizations, and educational and governmental institutions, as well as many
individuals financially support this great event every year. This year celebrates B-PEP’s
31st Anniversary!
